Chemists Celebrate Earth Week

April 22, 2020 represents the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

For years, chemists have been promoting a better world through recyclable plastics, cleaner-burning fuels, phosphate-free detergents, environmental monitoring, and green chemistry initiatives. To promote the positive role that chemistry plays in the world, ACS established the Chemists Celebrate Earth Week (CCEW) public awareness campaign. This year the American Chemical Society celebrates Earth Week April 19-25 with the theme: Protecting Our Planet Through Chemistry.

However, we are celebrating under unanticipated and uncertain circumstances this year. Schools have been closed and no one is holding in-person events this year. The ACS will continue to host the CCEW Illustrated Poem Contest and is providing a host of digital and virtual resources for students, teachers, parents, and the community.

These resources include:

· E-editions of Celebrating Chemistry (in English and Spanish)
· Celebrating Chemistry Coloring book (PDF coloring sheets to download)
· Periodic Table Coloring Activity
· ChemCatcher (PDF old-style “cootie catcher” with Earth Day Trivia
· An Earth Day 50th Anniversary Timeline
· Other resources for K-16 students

Here are the contest rules and entry forms. It is important for students to read, and adhere to, the contest rules and to completely fill out the correct entry forms for the Illustrated Poem Contest to facilitate this process. (For your reference, you will select “Connecticut Valley” for the Local Section.) Submissions will be electronically sent directly to ACS National, and will be forwarded to local contest coordinators for judging. The submission deadline is Sunday, May 3 by 11:59 PM.
